Cyclist Died When Hit by a Car

On Sunday, April 3, a cyclist died after being hit by a car.

According to police the accident happened at around 6 p.m. on Independence Avenue near Lydia Avenue and 24 Highway One. A Lexus was traveling eastbound when it crossed into the westbound lane and took out a light pole and then hit 32 year old Anthony Saluto of Kansas City, Missouri who was an avid cyclist and was riding his bicycle home from work before watching the Royals’ opening game with the New York Mets. The driver of the car continued for at least a block before stopping and the accident was originally a hit and run before police found the vehicle.

Police say they are still investigating the circumstances of the crash and waiting for the results of laboratory analysis before saying whether any charges will be filed.

Local cyclists are calling for more bike lanes and reminding that the Missouri law says that motorists must be careful when passing cyclists and the cyclist must have a front light visible from 500 feet and a rear red reflector that is two inches squared or a red light visible from 600 feet. There must also be reflectors on any visible moving parts such as tires and reflective material or lights on each side of the bicycle or bicyclists.
