Couple Died in Rollover Crash

On Tuesday, August 4 a couple from Lee’s Summit died in a rollover crash.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol., the crash happened at around 11 a.m. when 56 year old Mark Groom and his 55 year old wife, Margaret Kelli Groom were driving in their 2003 Chevrolet Suburban on Interstate 70 in western Kansas. They were on their way to Colorado to visit family.

It appears that the vehicle cut off another driver and then the suburban swerved off the road, spun crossing both westbound lanes of traffic, rolled several times, eventually coming to rest in the median on the driver’s side.

Both Groom and his wife died in the crash. Also in the vehicle was 84 year old Richard Nieweg, who was Kelli Groom’s stepfather and he too was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three other passengers were the Groom’s grandchildren, two six year old boys and a 10 year old girl and they were all taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. One of the children was expected to be released from hospital shortly after and the two others were said to be doing well.

The Groom family ran an appliance, heating and cooling service business in Lee’s Summit.
