Hiring a Car Abroad

Many travelers hire a car when they are abroad on vacation as it gives them more freedom to travel around and see the sights.

The first thing to do is check to see if your American driving license is valid in the country you are visiting or whether you need to obtain an International Driving Permit which you can get from one of two agencies either the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the National Automobile Club the AA. You need to be over 18 to have one.

When you hire the car only use a trustworthy company and ensure you take out the maximum insurance cover you need. Most will insist on a credit card payment but do check your card information regularly to ensure that no strange payments have been taken off, even when you are home after your holiday.

Ensure that you carry your license, insurance and rental information with you in case you are stopped by the local police or in an accident. You should also keep the local United States embassy contact information just in case of an emergency.

Which Is The Safest Braking System?

When it is time to buy a new or used vehicle it is vital that you check out the safety features the vehicle has and one of the most important safety features is the braking system.

The braking system can make the difference between life and death and the best is an antilock brake system also known as ABS. This will stop the wheels from locking up in the event you have to brake quickly and will allow you to have more control over the steering. However, you need to learn how to use the system properly to enable maximum benefits to be had.

You should check whether the ABS is on all four wheels or only on two as some trucks, vans and SUVs only have the ABS on two wheels rather than four which is standard in passenger cars.

Another good safety feature is brake assist which can detect when you are braking in an emergency and can help activate the ABS more quickly and reduce the stopping distance.
