Man Charged with Manslaughter in Car Wreck

A man from Kansas City, Mo. has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of an elderly man in a car wreck.

The accident happened in August 2016, when 39 year old Gabriel B. Cornelius was speeding on 115th and Holmes Road. Gary Dramshek, aged 72, of Kansas City, was attempting to make a left turn at 115th in a Ford, when Cornelius, who was driving behind him in a Chevy, swerved to the left and steered into him hitting his vehicle on the left door. The Ford was pushed off the road and hit a gas main. Dramshek died later in hospital.

Cornelius has been charged with 1st Degree Involuntary Manslaughter and according to police, he was under the influence of both alcohol and drugs at the time of the collision. Police have also accued Cornelius of speeding at the time of the crash and prosecutors requested a bond of $100,000.

Man Dies in Fiery Accident

On Tuesday, November 8, a man died following a fiery accident on Interstate 435.

According to Kansas City police, the accident happened at about 12:37 p.m. Tuesday on northbound Interstate 435 and Bannister Road. A vehicle was making a sudden lane change and in front of that vehicle was a stopped Buick car which was being driven by 85 year old Arthur Garnett. Another man was driving a Ford Taurus behind the car making the lane change and it was unable to stop and rear ended the stopped vehicle. The driver got out and ran to the stopped car which became engulfed in flames almost immediately and saw Garnett in the driver’s seat with no other passengers. Although motorists stopped to try and get the driver out they were driven back by the heat and unable to open the door and he died at the scene.

His son has expressed his gratitude for those who tried to help and police say the accident is still under investigation.

Fatal Accident in Kansas City When Vehicle Falls off Bridge

On Monday morning, October 24, a fatal accident was discovered in Kansas City, Mo.

According to Kansas City police, they do not know when the accident happened but on the Monday morning, workers from Kissick Construction were in their scrap yard when they saw the wreck of a vehicle and called 911. On arrival at the scene, police discovered the body of 60 year old Michael Blackwell of Kansas City, Mo. inside the car. They believe that the crash happened even more than 24 hours before it was discovered.

Following investigation, they determined that the vehicle was travelling southbound on Highway 71 when it hit the concrete Jersey barrier on the Highway 71 Bridge and jumped over the left side of the bridge to the ground below. Investigators said it is rare for accidents of this nature to happen and are continuing with the investigation.

Traffic Problem North of Kansas City

On Friday, September 2, there was an unusual traffic problem north of Kansas City, Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the accident happened shortly after noon on Interstate 435, when a tractor trailer carrying between eight and 11 million honey bees overturned on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes near the Interstate 35 intersection in the Northland.

The truck was transporting 408 hives from North Dakota to Tampa, Florida and each hive would normally have around 40,000 bees.

An emergency response team from MDoT as well as Kansas City police, responded to the scene and called local bee companies to help control and gather the insects. Authorities said at least some of the bees had flown away from the scene but they had no idea how many. Also attending the scene were the owner of the bees, Brian Buoye and a local bee expert, Matt Winstead of Midwest Bee Removal.

Young Boy Dies on World’s Tallest Waterslide

On Sunday, August 7, a young boy died on the world’s tallest waterside in Kansas City.

According to authorities, the accident happened on the Verruckt water slide at the Schlitterbahn Water Park in Kansas City, Missouri. The slide is 17 storeys tall, some 168 feet, and was opened in July 2014.

Caleb Schwab, aged 10 and the son of lawmaker Reb. Scott Schwab was in a boat on the slide with two women. They both suffered minor facial injuries and Caleb died of what was called a fatal neck injury.

Riders on the slide are supposed to be at least 54 inches tall and they climb 264 stairs to the top before getting into the rafts to slide down, which reach speeds up to 70 mph.

The water park passed its annual inspection in June as Kansas law requires permanent rides to be inspected annually by their parks. However, following the accident people are now coming forward and talking about children who are too small being allowed to ride and shoulder straps breaking or falling off during the ride.

Teen Critically Injured in Hit and Run

On Wednesday July 13, a teen was critically injured in a hit and run incident in Kansas City.

According to authorities, the incident happened in Kessler Park at Reservoir and Lookout Point Drive at 4.30 a.m. It appears that Keontay Cheffen was hanging out with the four suspects in the incident when there was a disagreement. It seems that the suspects were in a stolen vehicle and drove at Cheffen and another friend. Cheffen pushed the friend to safety, but was then hit himself although the driver claims they did not mean to hit him.

Cheffen was seriously injured in the crash and was taken to Truman Medical Center with severe head trauma. There doctors are keeping him on a ventilator in a medically induced coma in an attempt to reduce the swelling and bleeding in his brain.

The incident is still under investigation.

Three Boaters Injured on the Lake of the Ozarks

On Saturday, June 18, there were boat-wake collisions on the Lake of the Ozarks which led to three boaters being injured.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the first incident happened at around 1.20 p.m. when 52 year old Stephanie Block, of Bates City, Kan., was riding in a new Chaparral Runabout when the vessel collided with a boat wake at the 16 mile marker sending her into the air, then she landed heavily back on the seat of the boat. She was taken by ambulance to Lake Regional Hospital for the treatment of moderate injury.

Following this accident, at 5 p.m. at the 11 mile marker at Big Niangua, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, report that Ronald Gorter hit his head on the boat cabin ceiling when a 2002 Sunsation, being driven by 66 year old John Vitkovic of Willow Springs, Illinois, hit a wake. He was also taken to Lake Regional Hospital for the treatment of moderate injury.

Shortly afterwards, at 5.45 p.m. 40 year old Joseph Hons of St Charles, Mo. went airborne when the boat he was in, being driven by 47 year old Deanne Hons, hit a wake along the main channel near the 25 mile marker. He was also taken to Lake Regional Hospital for treatment of what were said to be moderate injuries.

Body of a Pedestrian Found in Kansas City

On Wednesday, May 18 the body of a pedestrian was found in Kansas City.

According to police the body was found around 5.30 a.m. at the Flying J near I-435 and Front Street. Police believe that a pedestrian, who may have been homeless, fell asleep underneath a tractor-trailer parked in the back of the parking lot. When the driver later pulled his truck out to leave, he ran over the man and killed him. Police believe the trucker might not know they killed someone since these trailers are so heavy.

Police say that the injuries were substantial and the victim, whose identity has not been released; only that he was a male, died immediately at the scene

Investigators are still working to identify the victim and talking to witnesses in order to identify the driver. In addition they plan to look at surveillance video to try and identify the driver, but they are not hopeful they will be able to identify him as there as so many truckers passing through.

Cyclist Died When Hit by a Car

On Sunday, April 3, a cyclist died after being hit by a car.

According to police the accident happened at around 6 p.m. on Independence Avenue near Lydia Avenue and 24 Highway One. A Lexus was traveling eastbound when it crossed into the westbound lane and took out a light pole and then hit 32 year old Anthony Saluto of Kansas City, Missouri who was an avid cyclist and was riding his bicycle home from work before watching the Royals’ opening game with the New York Mets. The driver of the car continued for at least a block before stopping and the accident was originally a hit and run before police found the vehicle.

Police say they are still investigating the circumstances of the crash and waiting for the results of laboratory analysis before saying whether any charges will be filed.

Local cyclists are calling for more bike lanes and reminding that the Missouri law says that motorists must be careful when passing cyclists and the cyclist must have a front light visible from 500 feet and a rear red reflector that is two inches squared or a red light visible from 600 feet. There must also be reflectors on any visible moving parts such as tires and reflective material or lights on each side of the bicycle or bicyclists.

Major Crash Injures Ten

On Saturday, March 5, a major crash injured 10 people.

According to police, the accident happened shortly after 7.15 p.m. at Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue. Police were chasing 25 year old Hakeem K. Harris of Kansas City who was facing several charges of kidnapping, armed criminal action and resisting arrest following a report from a woman who said she had been assaulted and held against her will for around two hours during a domestic violence dispute.

Harris was driving at high speed southbound and ran a red light. He collided with at least four vehicles and six adults and four children were injured and taken to hospital. One of those injured was a 12 year old boy who was ejected from one of the vehicles and his condition is said to be serious.

Harris was arrested at the scene of the accident.
