On Friday, September 2, there was an unusual traffic problem north of Kansas City, Missouri.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the accident happened shortly after noon on Interstate 435, when a tractor trailer carrying between eight and 11 million honey bees overturned on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes near the Interstate 35 intersection in the Northland.
The truck was transporting 408 hives from North Dakota to Tampa, Florida and each hive would normally have around 40,000 bees.
An emergency response team from MDoT as well as Kansas City police, responded to the scene and called local bee companies to help control and gather the insects. Authorities said at least some of the bees had flown away from the scene but they had no idea how many. Also attending the scene were the owner of the bees, Brian Buoye and a local bee expert, Matt Winstead of Midwest Bee Removal.
No serious injuries were reported
